Here's what I wrote back:
1. Get another job. Immediately. Don't try to launch a new venture out of desperation. Even if it's working gigs on Craigslist, temp work, contract work, shoveling snow… get your earned income stream flowing again. Not just for the cash, but to kill off the slow creep of desperation that will suffocate you otherwise.
2. Carve out 1 hour per day for the next 7 days to attack your bodybuilding business. Not a second more, not a second less. You HAVE the time. Pour all your love and hate and fear and power and insanity into that one sacred hour.
3. Your very first hour (TONIGHT!), take out a piece of paper and write out all the ways you could use your experience, knowledge, insight, anger, skill to create valuable and remarkable products or services for other bodybuilders. You are a database engineer, which means you have strong analytical powers. Is there an "over the top" (by most people's estimations) geek-out bodybuilder tracker or quantified-self tool or app you can build? Do you have a sharp tongue and biting wit you can use to write straight-shooter, no BS reviews of your favorite (and least favorite) bodybuilding products, monetized via affiliate links? If you'd like to offer personal training, post on FB and Instagram that you have room on your schedule for 3 clients, and to DM you if they're ready to take it to the next level. The options are endless. Write until your page is full.
4. Pick ONE of those ideas… the one you have the most right AND left brain juice for… and work like a berserker during each of your allotted hours to make it manifest. Do NOT waste time on the shit that feels good (getting biz cards made or whatever). Do the things you dread. Pick up the phone, send the email, meet the prospect at the gym… make it happen. Do whatever is necessary to make that first holy sale: the sale that proves to you, and your wife, that you have the spark of something here.
5. As your venture begins to bring in cash, and as your wife's buy-in cautiously increases… up your daily time. Bump up to 1.5 hours a day, then 2. But don't overdue it. Don't quit your day job. Not yet. Not until you have 6 months of expenses socked away. Don't risk time or capital: risk only heart, face, and ego.
You already know your passion: Bodybuilding. You have a large, proven, hungry, clearly-defined audience to serve, which means you're already FAR ahead of most.
All that's left is to get off the couch and make it happen.

If you're inwardly seething at the state you're in…
